The Ebola outbreak in 2014 and 2015 had a devastating impact on Liberia. The country experienced 10,678 suspected, probable, and confirmed cases of Ebola, with 4,810 deaths. This overwhelmed an already fragile health care system. Schools and many businesses closed for nearly a year, and many government institutions were unable to provide basic services. In response, USAID, in partnership with the Government of Liberia and other international donor and implementing organizations, led a U.S. Government effort to contain the disease and bring the number of cases to zero. The recovery interventions ensured that countries are transitioning in a way that leaves them better prepared for, and more resilient to, similar crises in the future. Credit: USAID
