Yawa Millimouno, 19, cares for the children sheltered in the Temporary Centre for the protection of unaccompanied children, without fear of being infected again. As the other instructor hired by Monde des Enfants, she survived Ebola. Nevertheless, she wears gloves and special clothing.

The Temporary Centre for the protection of unaccompanied children was opened by UNICEF in Gueckedou, in the forest region, the 17 December 2014. Children with one or both parents infected with the Ebola virus stay in the shelter of its walls.

During a quarantine period of at least 21 days, they are fed and housed in the centre by the NGO “Monde des Enfants”. They also receive psychological support.

Yawa caught Ebola in March 2014, after her brother’s funeral. She tried to flee but was caught a few days later by the authorities and taken to the Ebola Treatment Center (CTE) in Gueckedou. She survived and was hired by Doctors Without Borders to work in this CTE before agreeing to move to the new UNICEF’s Centre.

Up to now, all the Ebola orphans protected in this center were reintegrated into their communities and are supported by their extended family.
