Since Guinea closed its border with Sierra Leone at the weekend in an attempt to halt the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, stranded passengers unable to cross to either side complained about a lack of food and some entered into arguments with border security.
The disease has already killed over 300 people in Sierra Leone, and the measure was taken primarily to stop any infected people from crossing into Guinea.
One stranded lorry driver said he had spent four days on the border already.
“There is no food, we have asked them to allow us to enter as Guineans but they refuse,” said Diallo Saikou Yaya, who was stranded in Sierra Leone.
The customs building on that side of the Gbalamuya-Pamelap border post was filled with stranded passengers, some of whom had crossed into Guinea to buy food at a market, and later refused back across.
The Guinean Minister of Health visited the border with Sierra Leone on Friday and instructed the military to close it as a preventive measure.
Guinea is believed to have been the source of the outbreak that has swept through three West African countries, killing over 1,000 people in total.
A fourth country, Nigeria, has also reported Ebola cases.
The Ivory Coast, which shares borders with Liberia and Guinea, banned direct flights from those countries and said it would increase health inspections at its borders.
Guinea-Bissau also announced it was temporarily closing its border with Guinea because of the Ebola outbreak.
