The streets of Conakry were filled with rubbish on Sunday, as the Ebola virus continued to spread across the country. Senegal had closed its border with Guinea the day before, after Guinean authorities said that at least 70 people are suspected to have died from the virus.

The first cases, which took almost six weeks to associate with Ebola, were detected in Guinea’s southeast region, near the border with Sierra Leone and Liberia. The virus has since spread to the highly populated capital city, where eight cases and one death have been confirmed. The new suspected Ebola patients were brought to Ignace Deen National Hospital. Another 11 people are suspected to have died from the virus in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The death toll resulting from the outbreak in Guinea is the highest in seven years.
