A large consignment of medical supplies donated by the Chinese government arrived in Liberia on Monday as the country battles the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
A shortage of full-body suits and even clean surgical gloves has left health workers exposed to the virus and prompted some to refuse to treat Ebola patients.
The consignment of assorted medical equipment also included personal protective gear for use by health professionals.
Late on Monday, the World Health Organization said 1,013 people had died in the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
The disease has spread rapidly in the West African countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea where it emerged in March.
The current outbreak is the largest since Ebola first emerged in Africa nearly 40 years ago.
James Dorbor Jallah, who heads the Liberian taskforce on Ebola, said the equipment, which will be distributed to clinics from Tuesday, will benefit patients and health workers.
He appealed to the international community for more help in tackling what he described as a “global crisis.”
“Our people are dying left right and centre and the disease is spreading very fast in congested communities. This has got out of hand. It’s now spread across the sub-region,” Jallah said.
Earlier, a similar consignment of medical equipment worth 1.6 (m) million US dollars, donated by the Chinese government, also arrived in Guinea
